The air-burst thing sounds like a good idea. But what's preventing it from opening up as soon as it leaves the barrel? Once it gets to the end of the barrel, the resistance from the speed would cause it to start to split immediately. Also, the weight of the BB's (forcefully at the back) would cause it to flip in midair, like a rifle with hopup set too high.

thats the whole purpose. as soon as the 'cartridge' leaves the barrel, the paper is Supposed to break open and let the bb's go on their own, same way a shotgun shell works. its not an airburst round. perhaps you could better compare it to the SABOT rounds for tanks. round casing surrounding the true projectile-the dart is what does damage (but bb's in this case obviously) and the casing that creates a barrel seal is discarded as soon as it leaves the barrel.
